Frequently asked questions

What is OSB?

Oriented strand board (OSB), also known as flakeboard is a type of engineered wood similar to particle board, formed by adding adhesives and then compressing layers of wood strands (flakes) in specific orientations. It is a strong, versatile board suitable for structural use in humid conditions (Class 3), ideal for applications as diverse as roofing, flooring, and walls.

What is Tricoya?

Tricoya is a combination of sustainably FSC® sourced acetylated wood fibre compressed with a high-performance resin which has zero added formaldehyde to form a panel. The panels exhibit outstanding durability and dimensional stability which allow them to be used in applications once limited to products such as concrete, plastics or metals. With the added benefits of light weight, sustainable raw materials and a guarantee of up to 50 years above ground and 25 years in ground, these groundbreaking panels provide architects, specifiers and designers with an entirely new construction material, allowing great design flexibility and endless opportunities for creativity. Will SolarStudio install the Cabin range nationwide?

Yes, after one of our qualified representives have contacted you directly, to determine your specific needs. A project plan is agreed and the process of installing a cabin at your home can begin.

What Are SIPs?

Structural insulated panels (SIPs) are a high performance building system for residential and light commercial construction. The panels consist of an insulating foam core sandwiched between two structural facings, typically oriented strand board (OSB). SIPs are manufactured under factory controlled conditions and can be fabricated to fit nearly any building design. The result is a building system that is extremely strong, energy efficient and cost effective. Building with SIPs will save you time, money and labour. Link to SIP brouchure:

Are SIPs More Expensive than wood frame construction?

Building with SIPs generally costs about the same as building with wood frame construction when you factor in the labour savings resulting from shorter construction time and less jobsite waste. Home owner savings are realized because smaller heating and cooling systems are required with SIP construction. Additionally annual energy bills are significantaly reduced when compared to traditional block or timber frame buildings.

How strong are SIPs?

The structural characteristics of SIPs are similar to that of a steel I-beam. The OSB skins act as the flange of the I-beam, while the rigid foam core provides the web. This design gives SIPs an advantage when handling in-plane compressive loads

Where is the SIP manufactured?

The SIP is manufactured at our site in Co.Tipperary, located in the Suir valley at the foot of the Comeragh mountains. All processes are completed in accordance with our Quality Management System (QMS) and in compliance with tier one supplier requirements which affords Sure Finishing the ability to offer our customers an extensive product guarantee.

What is PUR insulation?

Rigid polyurethane foam (PUR/PIR) is one of the most efficient, high performance insulation materials, enabling very effective energy savings with minimal occupation of space. •Better insulation in buildings is a significant contributor towards the implementation of the Kyoto protocol (Paris agreement, COP24,COP25 etc). • energy savings, resulting in lower energy bills for home owners. • reduced CO2 emmissions which in turn reduce the impacts of climate change.

Do I need planning permission to install a Solarstudio Cabin.

All Solarstudio cabin models are under a foot print area of 25 square metres (270 Sq ft) and below 3m in hight meaning they are exempt from planning permission. Howerver the following should also be considered. No structure you build should be constructed or placed forward of the front wall of the house. The structure must not reduce the amount of private, open space reserved exclusively for the use of the occupants of the house to the rear or to the side of the house to less than 25 square metres. This means that at least 25 square metres of outside/garden space must remain after construction. The external finishes of any new structure (shed, garage, storage) and its roof covering must conform to those of the house. The structure must not be used for human habitation or keeping livestock/animals.

Our structural insulated panels (SIPs) are manufactured in Tipperary but we deliver

our throughout Ireland.
